Working through the history of National Socialism in Cologne
Since 1979, the NS-Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne has been engaged in reappraising the history of Cologne during the National Socialist era. Since 1988, the EL-DE House has been the headquarters of the Documentation Centre, named after the initials of the builder and merchant Leopold Dahmen. This building housed the Gestapostelle, which became the epitome of the fascist reign of terror in Cologne between 1935 and 1945.
During Gestapo times, the building served as a prison in which mainly prisoners of war and forced laborers had to spend weeks and months. Executions were also carried out there, in the middle of downtown Cologne.
The Nazi Documentation Centre is dedicated to the memory of the victims and researches the history of Cologne during the National Socialist era. The EL-DE House is one of the best-preserved memorials and makes visitors aware of how important it is to deal with history so that it will not be repeated.
