The artist group "Brücke" and German Expressionism
On September 15, 1967, the Brücke-Museum was opened. During this time, the recognition and appreciation for the art of Expressionism and the artist group "Brücke" in the public has risen steadily. The Brücke-Museum and its activities are not completely uninvolved in this development. Numerous exhibitions at the Stammhaus in Berlin have shown the emergence of the "Brücke" expressionism and the artistic development of its members, shed light on the context of its time and brought the various facets and themes of the "Brücke" to a wide audience. Other exhibitions, compiled from the rich collections of the house, were shown all over Germany and made the name of the Brücke-Museum nationally known.
On an international level, the Brücke Museum has contributed to raising awareness of Expressionism as an important German contribution to the art of classical modernism: with exhibitions of the "Brücke" - art from its own holdings and participation in major projects. During the 45 years of its existence, the Brücke Museum was able to expand its collection to become the world's largest collection of "Brücke" expressionism. The works of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, which are kept in the Brücke Museum, also house the most extensive collection of works by Schmidt-Rottluff. Through funds initially the Berliner Zahlenlottos, later the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin numerous important purchases could be made, as well as through the commitment of the Förderkreis Brücke-Museum e.V. and the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation.
Gaps in the collection were thus closed, especially in the paintings of the "Brücke" co-founder Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, but also Max Pechsteins and Emil Noldes. Also Schmidt-Rottluff was committed to his death in 1976 for the collection by Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Otto Mueller acquired and directly transferred the museum to the museum, so that all artists who were important for the development and development of the "Brücke" at the present time are comprehensively represented.
